Family Prayer Day

On The First Sunday After Christmas Day

This Annual Family Prayer Day is the vision of Diana Turner, who for twenty years produced 'Playleader' - a magazine that supported all who are involved with pre-school children.

For some years Diana promoted an annual prayer day during which people prayed for family life at church services, with their families at home, and while praying alone. She wrote and circulated the prayer below which many people continue to use.

A Prayer written for us to use on the Sunday after Christmas Day

Our Heavenly Father, today we bring to you the families of our land. As we think of your Son, Jesus growing up in obedience to Mary and Joseph, and their love for Jesus and each other, we ask for grace to follow their example. Forgive us and restore us when we fail.

May your Holy Spirit make each one like a candle, lighting other candles, and so put flight to darkness, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Now we want to restart this prayer day initiative. Would you join us in praying for family life across the land?

Diana explains "The Prayer Day began because we were told that during the second World War there were national Prayer Days, when the whole nation was called to prayer because it was under the threat of enemy invasion. We believed we needed a national Prayer Day again now because of a new and different threat to our national stability - the breakdown of family life.

So we invited everybody to unite in prayer for family life on a particular date. There was no need to hold special meetings or provide special literature - although many people appreciated having a prayer card, and on the day some churches held special family services . Everybody simply prayed! The Prayer Day can be something quiet that happens very unobtrusively because we know the power of prayer and that prayer changes things. We only have to pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV news to see the needs around us."

Do please help us to spread the light of Christ by prayer, and feel free to copy and distribute this prayer card and poster, which you can download in Microsoft Word format by clicking on these links:
